In A Real Tragedy, It Is Not The Heroine Who Dies; It Is The Chorus
Deutsches Theater, Berlin, 2021
"For in a real tragedy, it is not the hero who perishes; it is the chorus."
(Joseph Brodsky, Nobel Lecture, 1987)
Again and again, artists are silenced for their beliefs and their art. This evening gives these stories a voice. In the style of the strong female figures of Greek tragedy, we let them have their say above all, whereby a polyphony of voices develops.
For it is not the death of the individual hero that is the real tragedy, but the dying of the chorus - that is, of the community.
Based on the political show trial around the production of A Midsummer Night's Dream directed by Kirill Serebrennikov in Russia and the revolutionary movement in Belarus, in which especially women stand up for visibility and solidarity, a digital-affine, documentary-fictional theater evening is created, which deals with the discrimination, the silencing and the violent forgetting of artists in society.
Ksenia Ravvina blurs layers of reality by skillfully balancing her staging between analog and digital representation. […] “In a [real] tragedy…” by Ksenia Ravvina is […] the most aesthetically elaborate and, at the same time, the most successful production [of the festival].

Ksenia Ravvina’s performance revolves around the disappearance of resistant voices and images, around the silencing of critical artists.
